Roy Lane's family

Eileen Elizabeth Glubb (daughter of Harry and Ellen Glubb) married Roy Lane.  See here.  Roy was born  on 4 August 1910.  He died on 22 May 1990, and he is buried at the Avonhead cemetery with Eileen.  He was listed as being a retired watch maker at the time of his death.

Roy's paternal grandparents and family


Robert Bampton Lane (1842 - 16 November 1927). At the time of his death Robert was listed as being a stone mason.  His address, at the time of his burial on 18 November 1927 at Linwood cemetery, Christchurch was 473 Barrington Street, Christchurch.  Robert married Mary Ann Hopewell in England prior to coming out to New Zealand.  Robert and Mary appear to have brought their two eldest children with them, and then to have had four more in New Zealand:


1. Annie Emma Lane (1866 - 1943).  Annie married Frederick Charles Robbins (1867 - 1959) in 1892.  They had three children:
 1.1 Gertrude Eleanor Robbins (20 June 1893 - 1986) 
 1.2 Beatrice Emily Robbins (1895).  Beatrice married Frederic Edward Twyford (1895 -1949) in 1919.
 1.3 Harold Frederick Robbins (4 August 1898 -1976).  Harold married Olive May Saunders (15 October 1897  - 1980) in 1927.


2. Frederick Bampton Lane (1867 - 1921).  Frederick married Mary Amelia Strong (1874 - 1954) in 1898.  They had the following children:
 2.1 Frederick Alexander Lane (17 June 1904 - 1978) 
 2.2 Ronald Blundell Lane (10 December 1907 - 1975).  Ronald married Mavis Godber Rands (1908 - 1967) in 1930. 
 2.3 Evilynne Dorothy Lane (1909)


3. Eleanor Mary Lane (1876 - 1905).  Eleanor died aged prematurely at 28 years of age. 


4. Walter Charles Lane (1879 - 1950).  Walter died aged 71 years - I haven't been able to find records of any marriage.


5. Harry Hopewell Lane (1881) see below


6. Robert Arthur Lane (1886 - 1886).  Baby Robert died aged only 10 days.


Roy's maternal grandparents and family


Francis Thomas Mayo (1847 - 1922) married Eliza Atkinson (1852 - 1946) in 1881.  They had the following children:

1. Hugh John Mayo (26 May 1882 - 1972).  Hugh married Anne "Annie" Lindsay Stevenson (1888 - 1966) in 1914.


2. Constance Alice Mayo (31 December 1885, Ashburton -  28 May 1973).  Constance married Harry Hopewell Lane. see below


3. Gilbert Kendell Maurice "Kendall" Mayo (1887).  Kendall was living in Brooklyn, Wellington and listed as a "scholar" when he fell off a fence and fractured his left arm, in 1933.


Roy Lane was born to Harry Hopewell Lane and Constance Alice Lane nee Mayo.  Harry and Connie had married in 1909.  Harry died on 14 September 1941.  At the time of his death he was living at 46 Barrington Street, Christchurch.  He was listed as being a jeweller on burial records.  Constance died on 28 May 1973.  both Connie and Harry are buried in the Bromley cemetery. 

Ryde family

These people are no relation to my family or Alister's but Gwendoline Florence Ryde married Roscius Glubb, whose mother was a Gill - hence I came across them and thought I'd document what I could.  Gwendoline's father was Percy Nathaniel Ryde.  

Martha Ann Bluett (1845 - 1931) and Walter Ryde (1841 - 5 December 1906) were married in 1864.  Walter had arrived in New Zealand around 1863.  He settled in Oxford, Canterbury.  They had the following eleven children:

1. Walter William Ryde (1865 - 1935) married in 1890 Elizabeth Lucy Lilly (1870 - 1945)
  1.1 Ivy May Ryde (1894)


2. George Arthur Ryde (1866 - 1943) married in 1891 Frances Sarah Friar (1882 - 1948)
  2.1 Arthur Ashley Ryde (1891 - 1966) married Charlotte Pole Clark in 1921
  2.2 Annie Gladys Ryde (8 April 1893 - 1980) married Malcolm William Frampton (29 November 1894 - 1985) in 1920
  2.3 Rachel Moore Ryde (14 June 1895 - 1991) married Thomas Smellie Jackson (7 May 1899 - 1975) late in life, in 1965.
  2.4 William Frederick Ryde (1897) married Alice Victoria Wells (1901) in 1924
  2.5 Eric Walter Ryde (26 March 1900 - 1975)
  2.6 Francis Willard Ryde (1903 - 1903) died as a baby aged 7 months
  2.7 George Wilfred Ryde (1903 - 1920) died aged 17 years
  2.8 Charles Edward Ryde (12 June 1905 - 1993) married Myrtle Eileen Woods (1906 - 1927) in 1927.  Sadly Myrtle died later the same year of her marriage.  It doesn't seem that Charles remarried.


3. Annie Ada Ryde born 26 July 1868 and died 1868 as a baby.

4. Henry John Ryde born 26 March 1870 and died at the age of 92 in 1963.  He married Emma Grace Wheeler (1873 - 1961) in 1893.  They had the following children:
  4.1 Grace Ellen Ryde (1895) married William Percy Smith in 1920.

  4.3 Henry Frederick Edward Ryde (7 May 1902 - 1987) married Margaret Ngatangi Taiporutu Holmes (12 March 1905 - 1987) in 1923.

5. Frederick Ryde born 1872 and married Jessie Davis (1878 - 1938) in 1896.  However, he died at the age of just 25 in 1897, and so they only had the one child:
  5.1 Ben Fredine Arnold Ryde (1897 - 1964) married Jane Moffitt (4 August 1895 - 1980) in 1924. 
Frederick's widow Jessie went on to marry for the second time, to Peter Ferguson Campbell (1876 - 1929) in 1901.  Peter and Jessie had two children together, who sadly both died as infants:
  Cyril Campbell born in 1902 and died at just three days old
  Melva McNaughten Campbell born in 1907 and died at just three weeks old.


6. Emma Eliza Ryde born 1874 and married 7 July 1901 at St Andrew's Manse, Oxford, Canterbury by Rev J. McKenzie to David Alexander Murray (1870 - 1963).  At the time of her marriage Emma was the eldest surviving daughter of Walter Ryde.  Emma died in 1971 aged 97!  Emma and David had the following children:
  6.1 Ashley Bruce Hector MacDonald Murray (1902 - 1966) married Frances Willard Lymburn (10 March 1898 - 1991) in 1923
  6.2 Ellen Ryde Murray (4 August 1903 - 2000) married Mr Lymburn.


7. Edward Ryde (1877 - 1963).  He married Charlotte Annie Tobeck (1881 - 1949) in 1903.
  7.1 William John Raymond Ryde (26 April 1903 - 1987)
  7.2  Annie Lucy Mavis Ryde (1904)

8. Percy Nathaniel Ryde (1879 - 1955).  Percy married Isabelle Sarah Chapman (registered as "Hyde" not Ryde).  Percy died in 1955 and Isabelle died in 1962 aged 81 - she had been born in 1880 to James and Clara Chapman. They had the following children, including Gwen, who ended up marrying Ross Glubb:
  8.1 Gwendoline Florence Ryde (6 July 1906 - 8 June 1993) married Roscius Glubb (see here)
  8.2 Russell Nathaniel Ryde (25 November 1908 - 1997)

9. Janet Annie Ryde born 1881 married Thomas Ewart Brotherton in 1906.  They had one child:
  9.1 Ruby Alberta Brotherton (1906)
Janet apparently married again to Ernest Edward Coker (1881 - 1955) in 1915.  Janet died in 1954.  

10. Garnet Howard Ryde born 1882 married Lillian Frances McMillan (1889 - 1965) in 1911.  Garnet died in 1974.  Garnet and Lillian had two children:
  10.1 Noel Harold Ryde (12 September 1912 - 2004)
  10.2 Rona Annie Ryde (6 September 1914 -1998) married Mr Grundy.
  

11. Ellen Bluett Ryde born 1884 and died in 1964.  Ellen married Frederick Vere Gwatkin (1883 - 1962) in 1907.  They had four children:
  11.1 Frederick Walter Gwatkin (1907 - 1954)
  11.2 Phyllis Marjory Gwatkin (1909)
  11.3 Hazel Ryde Gwatkin (2 July 1910) married Charles Frederick Russen Lovegrove in 1931.
  11.4 Cara Ellen Gwatkin (1913 - 1914) died aged 17 months

12. Frank Ashley Ryde born on 4 August 1885 and married Sarah Annie Mitchell in 1925.  He married late and didn't have a long marriage - Sarah dying aged 54 in 1945 after twenty years of marriage.  He died in 1983, a couple of years short of 100.
