Joseph Hislop and Elizabeth Johnston

Joseph Hislop was an elder brother of my Great Great Grandmother, Janet Hislop.  Joseph came to New Zealand with his brother Robert and sister Jane in 1877 on the ship Rakaia.  Joseph was 18 years old at the time and with his brother, was listed as a paper maker from Midlothian.  The Rakaia left Clyde on 7 September 1877 and arrived in Canterbury on 10 December 1877.

Joseph Hislop married Elizabeth Johnston in 1885.

Joseph and Elizabeth's eldest son was Alexander Robert Hislop and he was born in 1885.  In 1912 Alexander married Elizabeth Mawson.  He died in 1971.

The second Hislop child was daughter Jane Dalgleish Hislop.  She was born in 1887.  I don't believe she ever married or had any children. Jane died in 1967 at the age of 80.

The third Hislop child was Joseph Hislop, obviously named for his father.  Joseph was born in 1888.  In 1916 he married Hannah Blanche Oman.  Hannah had been born in 1889 to Ellen and William Alexander Oman.  Joseph died in 1964  and Hannah died in 1971.

Joseph and Elizabeth's youngest child was James Malcolm Hislop.  He was born on 21 June 1890 in Christchurch and died on 15 July 1979 Auckland.  James married twice.  His first marriage took place in Gisborne on 1 March 1916 when he wedded Elizabeth Edith Haughie (daughter of Elizabeth Argyle and Joseph Haughie; 4 March 1890 Canterbury - 11 November 1922 Gisborne).  This marriage produced four children -
1. Joseph Keith Hislop 8 December 1917 Gisborne - 15 May 2001 Wairoa.  Married in 1945 and had children. Known as "Bill"?
2. James Llewellyn "Jimmy" Hislop 1919 - killed in action 23 October 1942, Alamein, Egypt
3. Deidre Dalgleish Hislop
4. Valerie Patricia "Pat" Hislop 7 August 1921 Gisborne - 13 March 2008 Takapuna, Auckland.
It's sad to think that these four little children must have all been under four years of age when their mother died.
In 1926 James married for the second time, this time to Elizabeth St Clair (daughter of Mary and Hubert St Clair; 6 October 1897 - 1973 Wairoa).  There didn't seem to be any children from this marriage.

Again, I'm very keen for any further information anyone has on this Hislop branch.

11 September 2011.  I'm very excited to have received a call from a lady who has a letter James Llewellyn Hislop wrote to her father, before his death.  I'll post the transcript of that letter once I receive it.  It makes this blog worthwhile when you are able to make these kind of connections!
