Duncan Kennedy Snr (father in law of Jane Hislop)

Duncan Kennedy was been born around 1814  born in Invernesshire, Scotland to Alexander Kennedy and his wife Annie (whose maiden name was also apparently, Kennedy).  Alexander was a farmer.  


Around 1844 Duncan married Margaret Macdonald in Argyllshire - he was about thirty at the time.   

Duncan came to New Zealand on the ship Indiana into the port of Canterbury on 23 November 1858.  He had left Scotland on 2 August 1858 and was listed as being a Shepherd.  He was aged 40 at the time of the trip, meaning he would have been born around 1818.  This looks to be the correct Duncan Kennedy, as his wife is listed as 35 year old Margaret Kennedy.  Also travelling with the family were not three, but six children as follows:


1. Angus Kennedy aged 13 (born around 1845)
2. Alexander Kennedy aged 11 (born around 1847)
3. Coll Kennedy aged 7 (born around 1851)
4. Mary Kennedy aged 5 (born around 1853)
5. John Kennedy aged 3 (born around 1855)
6. Ronald Kennedy aged 9 months (born 1858)

Duncan died on 30 July 1904 at Wainui.  He was 89 years old at the time of his death, and had worked as a farmer.  Duncan was buried at the Akaroa Cemetery on 2 August 1904.  The presiding priest was Rev.  Fr. J.A. Kennedy, and Duncan was listed as being a Roman Catholic.  At the time of his death he left four sons, aged 57, 55, 50 and 43 and a daughter aged 45.  The informant, with respect to the death, was John Kennedy, one of Duncan's sons.


He had married Jane Hislop when he was 33 years old, in Christchurch.  Records show that the marriage was registered in 1884.  


A Colin Kennedy died in 1927 aged 75 years.   This would have meant he was born around 1852, which is around the time that young "Coll Kennedy" was born.

William  George Barnett (1840 - 1931) married Mary Symons in 1863 in New Zealand.  Their full family is as follows and were all born in New Zealand:

   1.1 Dulcibel Barnett (1901).  Married William McClennan in 1922.
   1.2 Areta Amelia Barnett (1903).  Married John Thomas Fielding in 1925.
   1.3 Sidney Walter Barnett (1905).  Married Isabella Alma Gladys Morrow in 1925.
   1.4 Nellie Rauti Barnett (5 February 1907 - 2003).  Died under the name Nellie Rauti Duncan, but could not find any marriage.

2. William Herbert "Willie" Barnett was born in 1875.  In 1896 he married Sarah McKeown ( 1878 - 1966)  William died in 1937. 
   2.1 Mary Elizabeth Barnett (1897).  She either married Frederick Arthur Ruthe in 1915 or Peter Martin Dowie.  Unsure which marriage was hers.  
   2.2 Albert Barnett (30 June 1898 - 1977)
   2.3 Alma Caroline Barnett (1899 - 1971).  In 1922 she married Lindsay Allen Bent (25 September 1899 - 1985). 
   2.4 Harold Walter Barnett (14 October 1900 - 1993)
   2.5 Maude Barnett (1903)
   2.6 Mabel Dorothy Barnett (15 April 1905 - 1985).  In 1925 she married John Henry Neems (4 October 1903 - 1985)

3. Amy Nora Louisa Barnett was born in 1876.  In 1894 she married Thomas Jones.  Amy died in 1961.
   3.1 Effie Irene Jones (1 July 1900 - 1999).  Died as Effie Timmins, but I have been unable to find a marriage
   3.2 Thomas William Gordon Jones (10 July 1902 - 1975)


4. Francis Niari Taroatea Barnett was born in 1878. 


5. Jessie Barnett was born in 1881. In 1899 she married Matthew Henderson.
   5.1 Francis Joseph Roderick Henderson (1900 - 1906)
   5.2 Doris Marian Emily Henderson (1901)
   5.3 William Simmons Henderson (31 August 1902 - 1979).  Married Agnes Lilian Wheeler (19 March 1904 - 1998) in 1921.
   5.4 Thomas Cleave Henderson (13 February 1904 - 1984).  Married Marjorie Lilian Young in 1924. 


6. Mary Ava Barnett was born on 15 June 1882.  In 1905 she married Henry Ray AKA Henry Te Rawhati Vercoe (1885 - 1962).  Mary died in 1974.
   6.1 Neal Te Taute Vercoe (1 August 1908 - 1986)
   6.2 Raharuhi Lewis Vercoe (23 December 1910 - 1985)


7. Albert Edward Maihi Barnett in 1883.

Samuel Timothy Neems (1866 - 1950) married Alice Isabel Holliday (1867 - 1955) in 1896.
